An Evening of Sport

We are delighted to bring you a star studded sports panel ready to chat on stage to our presenters all about their careers and achievements (see below for panel profiles). Ask anything in our audience Q &A and learn more about your favourite sports. If you love sport, this is the local event of the year!

We champion our local area so we will also have a special interview with Stamford Ladies Rugby team member Kayna Penrose-Toms who plays for the England Deaf Rugby Union and was selected for their four match series against South Africa last year.

The evening is a fundraiser for the station and Corn Exchange Theatre. Alongside the event we have a raffle with incredible prizes to be won!

Matthew Hoggard
Matthew Hoggard is one of England’s greatest ever fast bowlers, having taken 248 wickets in 67 test match appearances. Matthew was a key member of England’s celebrated pace attack from the epic 2005 Ashes series, when England won the Ashes for the first time in 18 years. Nowadays, in addition to his commitment to supporting charitable causes, Matthew is a popular keynote speaker at events and is known locally for running cookery classes at Hoggy’s Grill, based at Rutland Nursery on the south shore of Rutland Water. In 2006 Matthew was awarded an MBE.

Geordan Murphy
Geordan Murphy was one of the finest Irish rugby players of his generation and is a legend at Leicester Tigers. Geordan was capped 72 times by Ireland and toured New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions in 2005. At Tigers he made over 300 appearances, won eight Premiership titles and two European Cups. He retired from the professional game as the most-decorated man in Premiership Rugby history, going on to enjoy a successful career as
a member of the Tigers’ coaching team. Earlier this year, Stamford School appointed Geordan as Director of Rugby Performance with responsibility for leading performance development across the school and supporting student pathways into elite sport.

Linton Grant
Linton Grant is the Assistant Coach for the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey team who play in the Elite League and won the League Playoffs earlier this year. After growing up in the Midlands and playing for the Solihull Barons as a junior, Linton moved to Canada and has being working for a decade in North America including as Assistant Coach with Okotoks Oilers and Alberta Junior Hockey League. Linton will give us unique insight into the fast-paced, exciting and dynamic sport of ice hockey, and the highs and lows of being in coaching for such a renowned team.

Colin Clews
Colin Clews is founder and race director of the CiCLE CLASSIC, Britain’s only UCI-level one-day road race. The race takes part in Rutland and Melton and the first even took place in 2005 with Women’s CiCLE CLASSIC beginning in 2016. Colin cycled for Great Britain as junior and followed his love for cycling into officiating and then organising races, such as the Macclesfield Supacross. Colin is an incredible advocate for cycling and champions our local area. He will be talking all about setting up the race in Rutland, international sport event management, doping control and his experience as technical delegate to the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
