South Kesteven District Council wants to include Rutland in a new unitary authority, under plans for local government reorganisation.
They and North Kesteven propose creating three new authorities in Lincolnshire, one for North and North East Lincolnshire, One for Boston, Lincoln, East and West Lindsey and a third for South Kesteven, North Kesteven, South Holland and Rutland. The population proposed would be 405,000 and they mentioned protecting Rutland's ceremonial status as a priority. It would ultimately mean Rutland would join the Lincolnshire Mayoralty. They also hope to bring Rutland's council tax down to the level of South Kesteven. Rutland County Council's leader has welcomed another option on the table, along with an alliance from North Leicestershire.
Initial proposals need to be with government by this Friday, and councillors are discussing the new proposal today.
