Stamford Pubs & Breweries Book Launch

It’s almost twenty years since Martin Smith released the epic Stamford Pubs & Breweries, published by Hugo Spiegl of Stamford. The coffee table-sized book, running to 328 pages, was envisaged as a companion volume to the Royal Commission on Historical Monument’s The Town of Stamford from 1977.

Since then the book has become almost impossible to get hold of, with occasional copies fetching high prices. The book became one of the most in-demand local titles at Stamford Library, until the book mysteriously disappeared one day.

It was when the author did a fruitless search for the title on Abe Books, that he decided it was perhaps time for a reprint. This intention developed into a revised edition, which includes a new Preface covering changes since 2006, many new illustrations and a subtle redesign. Image quality has also been improved.

Martin commented ‘I’m very pleased with the new book. It’s even more impressive than the original and the printers have done a superb job, right down to the beautiful marbled end papers’.

The new book is a high-quality hardback volume expanded to 344 pages with 291 illustrations. It is litho-printed on art paper with a dust jacket and a red cloth cover featuring a gold embossed Phillips beer label. It is traditionally made in England with the pages sewn in sections.

Fewer than 70 copies are available and they can be bought from St Mary’s Books and Walker’s Books, as well as direct from stamfordpubs.uk. The book retails at £45 and would make a perfect Christmas gift.

The author is hosting a book launch at the Tobie Norris on Friday 12th December 2-4pm where copies will be available for a promotion price of £40 cash only. The purchasers of the first five copies sold will get a free drink at the pub.
