Rutland and Melton is set to benefit from the government’s latest round of levelling-up money. A bid for twenty-three million pounds, jointly by Rutland County Council and Melton Borough Council together with Alicia Kearns MP has been accepted, and will mean new facilities at the Rutland Memorial Hospital, improvements to public transport and investment in the county’s tourism, as well as a refurbishment of Melton Theatre and investment in the Stockyard site at Melton Mowbray Market
Ahead of the announcement that the bid was approved, Rutland and Melton’s MP sought assurance in Parliament from the Prime Minister that our area would be treated equally to other bids, and Rishi Sunak said rural areas such as ours were just as important.
Rutland County Council and Melton Borough Council’s three key themes of the joint bid:
1. Food Innovation: development of the Stockyard site to provide a multifunctional events space and associated infrastructure, food and drinks production units and spaces where visitors can enjoy our local produce
2. Health innovation: development of a new digital innovation facility anchored around health at the Oakham Hospital Site
3. Sustainable Travel: development of an e-enabled, community directed approach to demand focus travel, based on a Mobi-Hub, headquartered at the Oakham Hospital Site but providing links across the whole geography harnessing the economic potential of over 100,000 people.
Rutland County Council and Melton Borough Council's joint levelling-up bid Planned Investments:
· Major upgrades to Melton’s Stockyard, with increased food production units and improved retail facilities.
· Healthcare boost through the creation of a Medi-Tech research and innovation space in Rutland.
· New Demand Responsive Transport infrastructure, improving public transport and linking towns and countryside across our area.
· Culture investments in Rutland and Melton, refurbishing the SMB theatre in Melton and transforming our tourism offer in Rutland.
