The New Year was marked with bells ringing out from Oakham All Saints Church for over three hours yesterday afternoon.
A group of visiting ringers rang a full peal. The arrangement though was new and so far is unique. They called it Oakham Delight Major. All eight bells were rung. The church is due to close from today to allow new lighting to be installed over the next couple of months. Sunday services will move to Oakham School Chapel and some midweek services will be suspended. Access to the bell tower is still likely though to be maintained. Tower captain at Oakham Louis Totaro says it was a really special occasion and so far unique to the town.
‘Everybody in the ringing community do bring different methods, some of which go back hundreds of years, but there's always new methods being constructed because they're very mathematical. It was all to do with sequencing and today's was a new method which they've called Oakham Delight Major. It is the first time it's ever been rung anywhere. Obviously in its inaugural tower. Quite technical, it would look very much like mathematical patterns but absolutely sounded brilliant and I can only thank the ringers that took part because they are very experienced with quite a number of them and they really give it justice and it sounds really, really good. Some really good striking involved’.
