The development of the old Newage site on Barnack Road in Stamford is moving a step closer with news that builders have been appointed.
South Kesteven District Council and landowner partner the Burghley House Preservation Trust have entered into agreements with Morris Homes, Inspired Living and Burghley Land Limited on the former Cummins site and adjoining Burghley land. Morris Homes will build the houses, including some affordable properties, Inspired Living, a retirement village and Burghley will look after the commercial development. There will also be areas of green and open space. The whole site at St Martin's Park measures 14.7 hectares. The District Council bought the Cummins site in 2018. Outline planning permission was granted three years ago. David Pennell, CEO of Burghley, says that they are in it for the long term and the old factory has been standing on Barnack Road for too long.
‘Yeah, love it to be knocked down, clean, tidy tomorrow and It will happen soon. We are getting there. But we've got to do it the right way and for us it's about making sure that it all works. Long term, we've been here 500 years, anything convenient for five years, two years, one year, whatever it might well be, but in 15 years we will look at it and thank goodness we did that properly. And Stamford, we hope we're looking at again, thank goodness they spent time and effort getting it right because actually they're enjoying it now’.
