A writer and performer from Uppingham is today launching a series of poems to celebrate people who have made outstanding contributions to British life
who would have or will turn 100 this year. Inspired by the upcoming celebrations for Sir David Attenborough in May. The late Queen would also have celebrated her centenary. Henry Dawe begins with a poem today in tribute to the late actor Kenneth Williams born on this day 100 years ago. The centenary poem is available to watch on Henry's website and will also be broadcast this evening after 9:00pm on Rutland and Stamford Sound. Henry says the five of them have a legacy each worth explaining.
‘So whether it be classic comedy in the case of Kenneth Williams and Eric Morecambe and Stanley Baxter, or in the case of her lifetime of service for the late Queen or in Sir David Attenborough’s extraordinary broadcasting career which has now spanned over eight decades. It's just remarkable. All these people have made amazing contributions to the life of our country and have in some cases become world famous. So it's quite remarkable that they all would have turned 100 within a few months of each other and so the Centenary poem series will span from Kenneth's birthday on the 22nd of February and go all the way to Stanley's on the 24th of May. So very much hope people will be able to enjoy the messages which the poem is trying to put across’.
