The leader of the Conservative Group on Rutland County Council says young people in Rutland shouldn't be penalised for where they live when it comes to post 16 transport.
The subsidy was removed as part of the transport review for new starters needing to travel for courses this new school year. Lucy Stephenson, who chairs the Strategic Overview & Scrutiny Committee, says budget savings shouldn't be creating inequality of opportunity in our local communities.
‘We know that residents are concerned about its removal. We know that residents are concerned about the impacts on the equality of opportunity for our young people. We have agreed that we absolutely need to revisit that during the budget setting process. Our young people shouldn't be penalised for living in a rural area. Times are tight. We know they are tight for the local government but they are also tight for family households and their budgets’.
