A flag raising ceremony is taking place in Oakham Castle grounds this morning to mark Merchant Navy Day to honour the brave men and women of the force who kept the nation afloat during times of peace, crisis and conflict.
It is held on 3 September in memory of the sinking of the SS Athenia back in 1939. On this day, it was the first British merchant ship lost in World War II. The event, organised by Rutland County Council, will see the Red Duster raised, along with readings and prayers.
