The chick on the Manton Bay Nest has taken his first flight at Rutland Water.
1RO was born on the night of the Northern Lights and was the first and only survivor of Maya and 33’s nest this year. This fledgling was one of the most memorable, as George Smith from the Lyndon Visitor Centre explains.
‘He's been helicoptering for about a week and a half now, maybe even two weeks. He decided he would take his maiden flight away from the nest. And instead of doing what we kind of expected him to do, which many of the other juveniles have done, where they just hop up to the camera perch and hop back down. He spent about 12 minutes flying around Manton Bay. Well, I think he was trying to land on the tall Poplar trees but couldn't quite manage it. So eventually settled on the T Perch, which I mean, that first flight is a really special moment, really magical. And it will be really nice to see him over the next couple of days. Maybe looking a bit wobbly but starting to explore a completely new dimension to everything really for him’.
