The founder of Rutland International Cycle Race is encouraging locals to support this Sunday's annual event.
Drivers are being warned to expect rolling road closures of around 15 minutes on route which includes Ashwell, Wymondham, Barleythorpe, the A606 at Langham and roads towards Somerby, Easton and Burrough on the Hill as well as Stapleford Park and Market Overton. Oakham High Street will be closed throughout the day for the first time on Sunday as it's where the 180 riders start and end this year. There will also be cycle related activities at Oakham Castle, stalls in town and shops open throughout the day. Race director, Colin Clews, says the event is of international importance.
‘We operate with the largest field in this country any year because we are the only international race and of course international regulations allow us up to 176 competitors, so we take as many as possible. Once again this year the popularity is meant that I've turned away 8 teams that would have liked to have been with us and we still have a field of 178 riders listed. But yeah, we've got teams from Italy, we got teams from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium and Ireland as well’.
