The latest group of magistrates from across Leicestershire and Rutland have been sworn in at the oldest court in the land still operating.
Oakham Castle saw 18 new recruits take the oath watched by Judge Spencer and the Lord Lieutenants of Rutland.
‘Oakham Castle, of course, was built in the year 1190 and Richard 1 commissioned the very first justices of the magistrates of the peace in 1195. So it's possible, as the judge pointed out today, but some of the very, very first magistrates visited the castle, which is wonderful. But I think it was very special for people to feel that they were in this historic setting when they're taking on such a responsibility, and I'm so pleased and grateful to all of them for doing that because you know, they are the actual bedrock of our justice system. And 97% of cases start in the Magistrates Court, which is amazing really when you think about it. And the magistrates are highly trained unpaid volunteers. They're not legally qualified but they are given great training and support. They do the most amazing job and they do it without any pay’.
