A teenager from Oakham who received a kidney transplant after years of dialysis is urging anyone who wants to donate their organs after death to make sure their family and friends are aware of their wishes.
Charlie Frieland has raised thousands of pounds for various charities and is speaking to Rutland and Stamford Sound on Organ Donation Week.
Normanton Church at Rutland Water and All Saints Church in Oakham are being lit up pink at night in support. Charlie says too often those who are left behind overturn wishes because they're not sure that's really what the person wanted.
"There is a large shortage of donors at the moment. The current waiting list is at an all-time high. It says about 8,700 adults waiting and 227 children. And whilst people may think that they're donors, when that person unfortunately passes away, their families are in a state where they can't decide to donate; they're not able to. They overturn the decision that their family members made. So whilst there may be enough people that are signed up to donate to that large amount of people, unfortunately an extremely large amount of percentage aren't actually going to do a donation."
