The statue of Queen Elizabeth the Second in Oakham has been a huge success,
says the Lord-Lieutenant, speaking a year after the unveiling. The memorial has attracted worldwide and local attention with a steady stream of visitors and sculptor, Hywel Pratley, has also been nominated for an award for his work.
‘It's extraordinary isn't it! Yes, it feels as if it's always been there and it's the most wonderful place and it has now become a destination. It used to be somewhere that people just cut through and now they go there and go to be photographed. I'm so pleased that married couples, people have been married at the registry office, tend to want to go over and have their photograph taken. I've seen people taking their dogs to be photographed and their children to be photographed and indeed the other day I found a dog biscuit had been left for the bronze corgis, which I thought was very funny. But you know, it's super it's so popular’.
