Stamford's long association with RAF Wittering was demonstrated yesterday as the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Britain was marked with a parade, service and wreath laying.
The base has had freedom of the town since July 1961. Squadron Leader Michael Masters from RAF Wittering says it's an important day for the base and for Stamford
‘We've had a long affiliation with the town 63 years we've had freedom but this is more to mark the celebrations of that day sort of 84 years ago. Where you know, dominant Luftwaffe came up against the British forces and we turned the tides and it was the starting point for turning the war’.
