Stamford's historic Town Bridge closes to traffic for seven weeks from today as essential waterproofing work takes place.
It was hoped by Stamford's county councillors that a one way system could be used, but highway chiefs at Lincolnshire County Council say health and safety doesn't allow it. Work times will be from 7:30am to 4:00pm, but the diversion is expected to remain in place continuously until the 1st of September. Lincolnshire County Council says essential waterproofing of the Grade 2 structure will protect it for years to come.
Meanwhile, Stamford’s retailers are joining forces to emphasise the town is still open for business and say there are many other routes in and out of the town. Many have produced detailed guides on how best to access the town centre. Chair of Shop Stamford and owner of Energy Clothing on Ironmonger Street, Sarah Sewell, says they're doing everything they can to help shoppers access the town.
‘Yeah, it has been a little bit of a worry for a lot of the retailers and businesses, especially that side of the river so to speak. We are just looking at trying to be proactive with this. A lot of the businesses have done on their social media the new parking areas, different routes into town and just keep promoting that all the time. So hopefully it's signposted well as well so that extra spaces in the Cattle Market will be used. And also it's a beautiful walk across from the Meadows and across the other bridge into town. So let's just see what happens really. But we're positive and we're going to keep sharing on socials how to find us and not to forget us, basically’.
