Stamford’s Cyberwise campaign is expanding into Rutland after the Easter break.
Workshops on parenting in a digital world in schools across the town saw over 200 parents and carers attend over the past few weeks. The final event was at Malcolm Sargent Primary School this week. Parents we spoke to felt empowered to make the right choice for their children.
‘He doesn't use my smartphone. He does use hers. But our television that's in the lounge, the big TV is constant on YouTube and probably not locked down as much as it should be. So yeah, you know, you've gotta be careful at any age, but I think now more than ever. Because of how all the algorithms are linked'.
'As a parent of a six year old and a four year old and a baby kind of looking ahead to kind of what Year 3 and Year 4 look like. In thinking about statistics of, you know, half of children by Year 4 have smartphones. It's something that I've lost sleep over that I've kind of massively worried about and with the Adolescence and with the Swiped documentary on Channel 4 it has kind of highlighted the seriousness of it'.
'It is so nice we weren't judged as a parent. I think it's so easy to fall into that trap of being the worst person in the world because I let my children on tablets and I think that's what I went in prepared for and actually it didn't feel like that at all. It just felt like like minded people all coming together to say actually, we're recognising that we're falling into this trap of parenthood and we need to do something about it together, collectively’.
