Thirty years of Rutland Sailability has been celebrated at Edith Weston.
The charity, based at the sailing club, was formed in 1994 and now has over 200 members and as many volunteers to help out disabled sailors. Yesterday a cake was cut and founders John Morley and Penny Wake were presented with awards.
‘I started off with a committee of Air Force people before the Sailability started. We were doing beach sailing because we didn't have any boats, we didn't have a jetty. And it all started because of Penny’.
‘Well, it was just one little boat that started it all that in actual fact that my late husband had and it was sitting there doing nothing. And so it seemed to me the right thing to do to give it to a worthy cause, which I did. And everything escalated from there really, and when my late husband had died he left some money to give away to charity. So that has continued and a very, very good cause it is too.’
