161 arrests during drink and drug driving campaign

Leicestershire police has revealed 161 arrests were made during its summer drink and drug driving campaign, which ran alongside the World Cup Tournament and say far too many motorists are continuing to put their own lives and the lives of others at risk.

Across Leicestershire and Rutland, the majority were for drink driving. Almost a fifth were drivers on suspicion of having drugs in their system. Nearly half were in the city and large numbers were reported in Northwest Leicestershire. More than a quarter of arrests followed road traffic collisions and over a fifth were during the day showing the effect of drink and drugs the day after. There were a range of ages from nearly one in five drivers under 24 to an 82-year-old. Officers say, although the football tournament is over, they'll continue enforcement activity around the clock on our roads.
