The High Sheriff of Rutland says the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day is one we should all be thankful for.
Colonel Richard Chesterfield enjoyed a full career in the Tank Regiment and ended his career at Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore. This weekend, there's an extra Armed Forces Breakfast at The Grainstore this morning, and a parade church service and party in the park in Oakham tomorrow.
"I think it's hugely important. We've had a few veterans who fought in the Second World War. I think we only have one remaining veteran who was at D-Day, and soon they will pass and we need to keep the memory alive of the sacrifice that they made so that we can enjoy our freedoms and it's sometimes too easy to lose sight of that sacrifice."
