Around half the places for a prostate cancer screening event in Stamford next month have already been taken.
The event on Saturday 19 September at the Danish Invader is targeting men over 40 who would like to have a PSA blood test. It's organised by the Stamford and Rutland Prostate Cancer support group, and places need to be pre-booked and paid for in advance. They were at Rock on the Rec yesterday promoting the event. Stewart Hird from the group says early detection can be key to survival.
"It's just always been part of our goal, not just to support local men who've got prostate cancer, but also to help spread the word in the community and to get people tested because early testing is so important, so crucial because if people get diagnosed early enough, it's curative. Sadly, too many men get a diagnosis when it's too late to be cured, and that's obviously devastating for them.
So we're just really trying to give men the opportunity to get tested. Just for the majority of them, it will be reassurance, absolutely, but there may be a few who might be flagged, might be something to investigate and to check out, and that's all we want to do, to give people that opportunity."
