Today is Rutland Day as well as Ride and Stride, a national initiative to raise money for our churches in Rutland.
It happens every other year and in 2023 raised over £22,000. There are 64 churches in the county. The record amount visited during the day is 41. This morning the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland as well as the chair of Discover Rutland are launching the Rutland Day celebrations in the castle by riding off to a number of churches in northern Rutland on ebikes. Doctor Sarah Furness is also president of the Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust and in Rutland, you're asked to nominate a church to raise money for and split your donation with the trust, which helps the historic buildings across the county. The Lord Lieutenant says you can choose which church to support and where to visit by bike, horse, on foot or even by car.
‘You can do many or as few as you would like, but it's a couple of great causes. So you can choose your church and you can raise money for the Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust, which really does a great job not just in providing grants, but it also puts people looking for funding for churches, in touch with all sorts of other funders. So they're very experienced at helping people make applications and showing them where to apply so that they can get more money’.
