Rutland and Leicestershire arrests following road safety campaign

Police in Rutland and Leicestershire have made nearly a hundred arrests for suspected drink and drug driving in less than a month following the launch of their summer road safety campaign.

The figures include 70 arrests for drink, 17 for drugs, and seven for failing to provide a sample. Just under half of those arrested were stopped within Leicester City with the remaining offences recorded across Leicestershire and Rutland.

25 arrests followed roadside collisions, including one driver who was nearly four times the legal alcohol limit. Officers also arrested 13 motorists between 5:00 AM and noon showing the continued effect of the morning  PC Steve Williams of the Road Policing Unit says anything that impairs your ability to drive just isn't worth it.

"All you're doing is you put yourself at unnecessary risk and you put innocent members of the public at risk who should not be put in those positions and driving a one-ton, two-ton, three-ton vehicle isn't ideal.

Even if it's not your fault, a pedestrian might just walk out in front of you, but if you've not got the capability to react to the situation, you could take someone's life."
