Rutland and South Kesteven District councils are working together to clean up the A1.
25 new bin houses were bought by Rutland last year for the Great North Road within the county borders to help reduce litter, but some have already been damaged by lorries when parking in laybys. On one day last month the two councils together collected over 2,100 kilograms of rubbish from the A1 in Rutland alone. The new leader of Rutland County Council, Councillor Christine Wise, has been portfolio holder for transport, environment and communities. She told fellow councillors it's a difficult and dangerous problem and is thankful they can get help from South Kesteven.
‘Yes. I mean, my message tonight was can we please stop people throwing litter out of their windows. The issue for us is that it's very unlikely to be Rutland residents that are doing that. It's more likely to be people passing through. But yes, we are working collaboratively with South Kesteven. They have a particular crew that are specialist in it because it is dangerous to go out on a high speed road collecting litter’.
