Rutland County Council has endorsed the merger with Melton and Charnwood
in local government reorganisation as the least worst option, according to the leader.
‘We won't be saying leave us alone because that would undermine our proposal and how we got to this point. The last thing I want to do is to undermine the North City South proposal because the last thing we want is to go into a one Leicestershire and that was clear in the council vote where nobody voted for the Leicestershire or Leicester City plans, both of which would have put us into one Leicestershire and again in cabinet, nobody voted for either of those so I don't want to undermine the position we are in’.
Yesterday the cabinet approved the executive of the council to write to government to back the North City South proposal, where Rutland and North Leicestershire were joined together. It follows a meeting of full council this week where only half of the county councillors outside the cabinet backed it. The other half abstained saying there were no suitable options, especially since South Kesteven, North Kesteven and South Holland withdrew their offer of Rutland joining them, leaving only Leicestershire wide offers’.
