The Golden Gates of Burghley House have returned this week after being sent away to be re-gilded by expert metalworkers.
The Tijou gates named after the designer form part of the facade on the West side of the house and were sent away to North Yorkshire last September for extensive restoration. Marketing manager at Burghley Tanya Johnson says the designer worked on some iconic buildings.
‘Yes, so the golden gates as they are affectionately known, which are usually found on the west front of Burghley House, haven't been in place for the last six months because they have been sent off for restoration. They are known also as the Tijou gates after the metal worker who designed them. So in this sort of late 17th century, this French metal worker Jean Tijou designed these gates. He was widely acclaimed for his skill and had installations at Hampton Court Palace and St Paul's Cathedral, so well known in that sense’.
