Rutland and Stamford's councils and community groups are thanking all those who supported yesterday's VE Day commemoration events.
for the 80th anniversary. Tomorrow, Stamford is hosting an afternoon and evening of live music on the Rec with food and community stalls. The Lancasters have also been confirmed to fly past at 2:45pm. The Rutland Big Band will play in the evening with the Vintage Singers and the Ukulele Band also performing. Stretton is also holding an event at the Hub into the evening tomorrow. Speaking at last night's event on Stamford Rec after he lit the beacon, Deputy Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and former station commander of RAF Cottesmore Gary Waterfall, says it was a day he was honoured to be a part of.
‘It’s so good to be here tonight and I think tonight of all the evenings, I've come down with the beacons, what a tribute. I was in London today, not at the service but an office very close by and the whole of London at a standstill. And you come in this evening, exceptional turn out and it's a real tribute to those that have secured our freedom we enjoy today’.
