One of the most well known Rutland retailers been given honorary membership of the Rotary in the town she started trading in 70 years ago.
Kath Gilbert's furniture shop on Ayston Road in Uppingham traded until just a few years ago. Her son, Mark, now has an antiques business in the same unit. Kath remembers helping countless people with their first homes.
‘Younger people, when they were getting married and they were getting the keys say to a council house, they'd come to me and say how much can I get in for? What will it cost me? I said well if you think about £100. I'll put everything in for you I will put bed, sofa, dining room table, chairs, cooker. Whatever is available I will furnish it for £100. So they were bringing me £100 and then as soon as they got the key to the house they could go straight in. I loved it. I have lived it and I love it.'
