Police are urging drivers in Melton and Rutland to garage their cars if possible or at least park them in a well-lit area, following a rise in catalytic converter thefts.
Catalytic converters have become so commonplace on modern motor cars that you may well have forgotten their vital role in cutting harmful exhaust emissions. Thanks to an increase in the price of the precious metals they contain, however, the theft of these devices has soared in recent months. A typical catalytic converter contains only a few grams of these metals but one of the rarest - Rhodium, currently sells for over £600 per gram.
As a result, drivers in Rutland and Melton are being urged to garage their cars if possible or at least park them in a well-lit area. Police say it’s also worth asking your dealer if they can help with locks or guards that are manufacturer approved. You can also register your converter and mark it with a forensic marker, which will make it harder for thieves to dispose of. Vehicles that sit high above the road are particularly vulnerable as gangs are able to access the underside of the car much more easily.
