A fundraising page to support rugby's Lewis Moody has topped £160,000.
Lewis, who grew up in Rutland and played for Oakham before the Tigers and England, announced less than two weeks ago he has motor neurone disease. Leon Lloyd and Geordan Murphy have put the page together so they want to make sure he doesn't have to worry about his income.
‘I think one of the first things that became very apparent for him was, you know, he didn't know what sort of time he's got left in relation to how long he's going to be able to work and how long he's going to be fully functional. MND is an absolutely disgusting disease which sort of sees you being completely debilitated and into a wheelchair and unable to speak. We've sort of had it later, going through it at the minute. So we're very conscious that we want this for Lewis in some way and I think those financial pressures were something that he was worried about, you know being able to work they need to pay the bills. So we looked into the best way to try and sort of get a few shillings in the bank shall we say and we decided to set up a Go Fund Me page which has been amazingly well supported. I think 3,000 or 4,000 people now have been in and varying levels of money has been donated and I think, you know, some really big sums and then, you know, some young people donating £2 and £5 as well. So it just shows what Lewis means to people and it's been nice to have that, I suppose, in the background so he can sort of not worry about those immediate financial constraints’.
