Improvements to Belvoir Ward

Source: Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust Facebook page

The mental health unit, that serves men with the most acute need across Rutland and Leicestershire say a £1.6 million refurbishment should lead to better outcomes for its patients.

Belvoir Ward, which opened at Glenfield in 1998 provides intensive psychiatric care for up to 10 men. Each patient has their own room with an en-suite and the ward has been decorated with local landmarks to help instil a sense of hope. NHS England provided a significant amount of money needed to refurbish the facility, which the Care Quality Commission said last year was tired and in need of updating. Whilst the work was going on patients were treated in a neighbouring county. Samantha Wood is head of service for mental health inpatients and urgent care for the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and says the improvements have the potential to make a huge difference to recovery for men with the most acute mental health conditions.

‘It’s completely freshened and brightened the ward and I think the patient. I mean, most of the patients in the unit will be there detained under the Mental Health Act, so eventually there against their will. So we want to make it as nice an environment as possible so that they can start to recover and start to feel a bit better. And we know research shows that there's a really strong link to mental health recovery to the environment that people are in. So we're really pleased that we got the investment and that we've been able to do the work'.
