The Rutland and Stamford area is coming together today to remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday.
The open air services taking place in Stamford this morning either side of 11:00am. The parade Marshall is Shaun Arthur, who's also chairman of the Stamford branch of the Royal British Legion. Vice Chairman Terry Meader thanks the local community for their continued support at this time of year.
‘Yes, it means a heck of a lot because I'm a 4th generation soldier. My great grandfather fought in the First World War. My grandfather fought in the Second World War, my dad was in national service and I did service for the Queen as well. Obviously the conflicts go on as we know sadly. It is sad but it's a way of life. We all thought when World War One was going to be the great war that would end all wars. It proved to be wrong and we always remember our fallen from World War One up to the present day’.
In Uppingham the service starts in the parish church at 10:00am and then moves outside to the churchyard. In Wing the village services open air this morning and there's also the yearly service at Spanhoe Airfield Memorial near Laxton, as well as services inside many village churches. Bourne also takes place this morning and Oundle this afternoon. In Oakham the county service will take place at 2:30pm with a parade from the castle grounds from 2:00pm. Wreaths will be laid after the service. The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland will be at both Uppingham and Oakham and this afternoon will take the salute on Oakham High Street.
‘Yes I will. Before the service, which is nice this year and we will have the service as usual. We will also be obviously laying wreaths. Then I will go to the Queen Elizabeth statue and lay a wreath there’.
