Rutland flag on display at Westminster for Rutland Day

With local government reorganisation pending, Rutland's MP says getting the county flag flying in the shadows of Big Ben this weekend to mark Rutland Day is an important step.

Alicia Kearns collected over 7,000 signatures to ask the government to protect the county ceremonial status, which is not currently protected legally if local authorities merge.

‘Over the last year we have come together in the most amazing way to stand up for our county and to show our pride in who we are and our identity. So this Rutland Day, as a small contribution and to show that we are fighting for who we are, I requested that Mister Speaker, for the first time in history, fly the Rutland flag inside Parliament directly under Big Ben so that everyone this weekend who walks past Parliament will see our flag flying. I'm so grateful to him for agreeing to that. So for this Rutland Day, we're celebrating not only in our county, but also in the heart of power, at the heart of our country, in Westminster’.
