Celebrations take place at Stamford Library today as it's exactly 120 years since the building was opened.
There are birthday themed crafts and activities between 10:00am and 4:00pm, as well as a cake cutting at 11:00am. The site was originally home to the White Lion Inn before becoming a bustling butchers market in the early 19th century. In 1804, the distinctive portico was built to house more than 50 butchers stalls alongside efficient butter market, as well as facilities for the town's fire engine and a watch house that later became a police station. In 1903, businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie made a donation to help convert the historic building into what became known as the Carnegie Library, on the condition it was there for generations to come. The library opened on the 25th of January 1906 following a grand procession through the town.
