As with most seasonal events, the region’s bin collection schedule has been affected by the timing of Christmas and New Year holidays. Rutland and South Kesteven councils are reminding residents of the change and also issuing general waste advice to help reduce landfill.
If you are putting your bin out for collection this week, bear in mind that collections are taking place a day late due to the Christmas weekend. Both Rutland and South Kesteven councils collected Monday’s bins on Saturday and are collecting today’s bins tomorrow (28th Dec). This means that Friday’s collection will be carried out on Saturday. The cycle is being repeated for the New Year holiday as well.
Households in Rutland should also have had a blue bag delivered with their previous grey bin collection. This is to be used for the extra recycling which tends to accumulate over Christmas and Boxing Day and can be left at the side of the grey bin for collection.
Residents are also being urged to use food wisely over the holiday period and reduce the amount they throw away if possible. Food waste accounts for half of landfill bin contents at this time of year. In addition, bin lids should be checked in the cold weather to ensure they haven’t frozen shut.
