33 cyclists are expected this lunchtime at Stamford's Sheepmarket as they follow the 12 Queen Eleanor crosses from Lincoln to London to help homeless charity The Connection at St. Martin's in the Field.
The four day, 219-mile charity ride started yesterday and finishes on Bank Holiday Monday. They started at Harby near Lincoln, then on to Lincoln Cathedral, and today Grantham, South Witham, Stamford with lunch at Second Helpings at Barn Hill Methodist Church, then on to Fotheringhay and Geddington.
In London, they visit Westminster Abbey and Charing Cross to see a replica of the final cross on the journey. After Queen Eleanor died near Lincoln, her body was transported on a solemn 19 day procession to Westminster Abbey in London. King Edward I subsequently commissioned 12 magnificent stone monuments known as the Eleanor Crosses at the resting places along the route. A book published last year by Alice Loxton about the historic journey was voted Best History Book by Waterstones.
