It's hoped the thousands of visitors to this weekend's Global Bird Fair at Lyndon Top can raise over a hundred thousand pounds to help save bird species off the west coast of Africa.
This year's conservation project where all the gate money goes is called Preventing Island Extinctions. And through Bird Life International, will work with local partners in São Tomé as founder and organiser of Global Bird Fair, Tim Appleton explains.
"And they are unique in many ways because they have a lot of critically endangered species. You know, ones that are only found on those small islands, and potentially those birds are under serious threat, mainly through hunting, where we're going to be working with the hunters to stop that. We are going to be looking at demonstrating to them that in fact you can put your gun away and you can actually bring people birdwatching.
And the idea is that we'll be promoting Ecotourism to the islands. We'll be working with schools, we'll be working with the local communities and basically, you know, looking at how island species can be saved and our lovely bird, the Dwarf Ibis, or São Tomé Ibis, and that bird will be saved. We're hoping to raise probably $140,000 and that will go a long, long way, as you can imagine in a small country, and hopefully change people's attitudes."
