£50,000 has now been raised to help emergency doctors across the region thanks to a baking competition in Oakham.
The third World Amateur Pork Pie Championships took place on Saturday at the Grain Store. The total has been increased thanks to a donation from the Freemasons. Chris Henfrey won the overall prize. Doctor Tim Gray, chairman and founder of EMICS (East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme), says in this case pies really are helping to save lives.
‘I can't stress enough how much this group of people have supported us. The Amateur Pork Pie Society and the Masons have enabled us to buy our own fast response vehicle. This is a.huge step forward for EMICS because it means we have a car which is fully equipped, doctors can sign up and do shifts on it. Paramedics, now we're taking on volunteer paramedics, which means our availability goes up, which means we can get out, treat more seriously injured and ill patients. So without the support we just couldn't do it. We are so grateful’.
