Prime Minister replies to question about Rutland's ceremonial status

The Prime Minister believes there are savings to be made in local government reorganisation and better services.

Andy Burnham responded to ITV News after reporter Lewis Warner pointed out the threat of Rutland losing its ceremonial status in the process due to the Lieutenancies Act not being updated after the county returned back in 1997 as part of local government reorganisation.

The reporter asked:

"England's smallest county of Rutland, looks set to lose its ceremonial county status and be merged with Leicestershire. For many people in that part of the world, they're quite proud of being England's smallest county, and it means a lot to them in their identity. Can you commit that Rutland will keep its ceremonial county status?"

The Prime Minister replied:

"I will commit to looking at that issue. It's a new one that you've raised. It's not been raised with me before, so I hope you'll allow me the chance to take a look at the issue. What I would say is that, in the end, it's the pathway to much better services and more power actually held at the local level."
