Oakham fire station's warning of the dangers of fires being lit in the countryside, especially in the dry weather, after visiting a number of woodland locations across the county yesterday afternoon and finding evidence of campfires, bonfires, and wild sleeping with a load of litter being left behind too.
They say not only can fires like this easily get out of hand due to dense vegetation and them not being properly extinguished, often it's hard for fire engines to access them, and it can cause devastation for wildlife habitats and landowners. They're asking anyone who has a fire to extinguish it properly before they leave and never to bury it as it can reignite later. They say a lot of fires they found were on private land where they believe people were trespassing.
