The funeral of one of Oakham's most well known figures takes place today.
Joyce Lucas passed away aged 90. Having co-founded Oakham in Bloom created and planted the Daffodil trail around town, funded mainly by the sale of jigsaws, campaigned for Rutland and served for many years as a town and county councillor and former mayor. Those attending the service at Oakham Methodist Church at 11:30am this morning are asked not to wear black. Richard Adams was also founder of Oakham in Bloom and says Joyce made a longstanding contribution to the town and the county.
‘Joyce is a great friend of mine, lots of enthusiasm, very outspoken on occasions, which isn't a bad thing, but I've got a lot of time for her and she did a lot of work behind the scenes that people are not aware of and I can remember when I was Town Clerk and she was Mayor at the time. Prior to that, prior to us starting In Bloom, she set out on things like planting a lot of snowdrops through the town and more recently, obviously daffodils. And I think it's fair to say that only a few weeks ago she was still out there, you know, doing things practically. She put her money where her mouth was. No a lovely lady, a sad loss’.
