The Rutland Community Fridges have now saved 35 tonnes of surplus food from landfill.
The project, which started in October 2020, now has four outlets across the area on Fridays in Oakham and Uppingham, every other Saturday in Greetham, and back in Oakham on a Wednesday evening at Victoria Hall. Sue Ball from the Rutland Community Fridges says the project helps in several ways:
"I would say about half of our visitors are people who are concerned from an ecological standpoint and they're concerned about the amount of food waste and want to come and do something about that because the food we get is excellent quality food: it's food with a lot of life left in it still.
But obviously a lovely side benefit of the scheme is that, yes, we may well help people eke out their weekly shop a little bit more, and we always say to people, come to us first, because we can't predict what we're going to get. Come and see what we've got first, then go and do your supermarket shop afterwards, because we may well help save a few pounds along the way."
