Rutland's rural policing team has recovered over £5 million worth of property since they were created across Rutland and Leicestershire five years ago.
The team say they rely on intelligence from the local community as well as property marking and trackers to recover machinery when it's taken. They've recovered £1.5 million worth of equipment over this year alone. Speaking at a farm security event at the Rutland Showground last week, which was in partnership with Chubb and the NFU, PC Matt Houghton, who works across Rutland and Melton, says working together is key to cracking down on criminals.
"We can't do this alone. A lot of the recoveries that we make is information passed to us from those rural communities. We set up these WhatsApp groups, we're in these WhatsApp groups to get this information fed into us.
People are out there, they're our eyes and ears, and we can't do the work that we do and be successful without our communities backing us. And we work nationally. We work with officers up and down the country. I've done work with the National Construction and Agricultural Theft Team over recent times.
This work is carried out up and down the country, and it's really important work. So dedicated rural policing teams are really important to police forces up and down the country, and I hope we can make the difference for those people in Leicestershire and Rutland."
