The Rutland Vineyard has more reason to celebrate after winning a silver in the annual WineGB awards for its homegrown white wine, which first went on sale earlier this year, and this week launched its own first homegrown red wine.
Both called First Crush, the first harvest from wines is said to be extra special. Today they're holding a mini food festival with cheese, sweet treats, and a hog roast. Co-owner of the vineyard at Barrowden Road, Ketton, Tim Beaver, says they're playing the long game:
"We've got our food fair this Saturday, which our white would probably be selling out probably this Saturday, I'm afraid to say. The red, we've got similar amounts. So the white sold out in three months. I fear the red could go the same way, I'm afraid. But first harvest, we have quite low yields. In hopefully three years time, we'll have about three times the amount of yield because the vines are still developing at the moment. So yeah, we're happy we had it and we won't be sad it's over kind of thing."
