Uppingham voted Best Place to Live in Midlands

The historic Fatstock Market which featured in The Times' review of Uppingham.

In its annual review of British towns and cities, The Times has awarded Uppingham the coveted title of Best Place to Live in the Midlands.

Despite fierce competition from towns such as Oakham, Stamford and Oundle, Uppingham has been voted the Best Place to Live in the Midlands by The Times’ annual review of UK towns and cities.

Rutland and its neighbours frequently feature in this highly regarded competition. Only last year, Stamford took home the prize for the Midlands and in 2013 it was voted Best Place to Live in the UK.

This year, The Times was unequivocal about its decision to give Uppingham first place: “There’s fierce competition for a place on our list in a part of the world that’s as pretty as the Cotswolds, but without the price tag and the tweeness. Uppingham’s compact size and friendly locals earn it the nod this year over local rivals such as Oakham, Oundle and that perennial Best Places to Live favourite Stamford.”

The article describes Uppingham as a feast for the eyes at every turn and mentions notable local events such as the Fatstock Market and the April Stilton Cheese Run.

The Times reviews locations throughout the UK every year across 11 regions. It assesses towns and cities against a range of qualities such as schools, transport, green spaces, house prices and the health of the high street. As well as nominating a winner in each of the 11 regions it also nominates an overall winner for the UK. This year’s UK winner was Ilkley in West Yorkshire.
