Uffington Primary School discovered a version of the Bayeux Tapestry, which is currently on display in London on loan from France, in their attic- now it will receive a new lease of life.
The 23-ft long work is thought to be from 1966, for the 900 year anniversary of the Norman Conquest in 1066, but no ex-students from that time have come forwards to verify.
On Sunday it was on display in the village hall, which was crowded with locals wanting to learn more and see it for themselves, before it gets taken to Lincoln Castle.
Now the school’s 79 children will be involved in creating a new similar length section which will accompany the display, this time focussing on the period after the Battle of Hastings.
Kate Genever, who has been commissioned for the project, is village archivist and an artist, and she said: “Every child will make a design that is included, whether that is in the margins or in the main bit, and then as a group we will see it all together.”
