Football
There was plenty of football action involving our local clubs on Saturday.
Starting in League One, Leicester City gave their fans something to smile about with a 2–1 home victory over Doncaster Rovers.
Meanwhile, Peterborough United left it late, grabbing an injury-time equaliser to secure a 2–2 draw against Burton Albion.
Closer to home, in the Southern League Premier Central, it was another difficult afternoon for Stamford Daniels. They were convincingly beaten 4–0 at home by league leaders Real Bedford.
Moving to the Peterborough and District League Premier Division, Oakham United suffered a narrow 3–2 defeat against Whittlesey Athletic Reserves.
Uppingham Town also had an afternoon to forget, going down 3–0 away at Ramsey Town.
There was better news for Stamford Reserves, who enjoyed an impressive 5–1 victory over Eye Rangers.
And league leaders Deeping Rangers Reserves continued their excellent form with a convincing 4–0 win against YDP.
In Division One, Ketton Sports secured a 1–0 victory over ICA Sports.
Elsewhere, in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, Bourne Town shared the points with Barwell following a 2–2 draw.
There was a fine away victory for Blackstones in the United Counties Premier Division, as they defeated Gresley Rovers 2–1.
In cup action, Deeping Rangers progressed to the next round of the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy, beating Bottesford Town on penalties after the match finished 1–1.
In the Everards Brewery Premier Division, Cottesmore suffered a 2–0 home defeat against Lutterworth Athletic Reserves.
There were goals galore in women’s football on Sunday, with both Stamford AFC and Oakham United enjoying emphatic cup victories.
Starting with Stamford AFC Ladies, who were in sensational form in the first round of the Lincolnshire Women’s Cup, thrashing Grantham Town 11–1 away from home.
And there was more cup success for Oakham United Ladies, who also enjoyed an excellent afternoon, beating Coalville Town Ravens Development 5–1 in the first round of the Leicestershire and Rutland Women’s Cup.
A fantastic Sunday for local women’s football!
Rugby
There were plenty of tries scored by our local rugby teams on Saturday, with on-form Oakham leading the way with a brilliant 60–10 victory away at Aylestone Athletic.
Oakham have now won all four of their opening games of the season and sit second in Counties 3 Midlands East.
In Regional 2 Midlands East, Stamford scored three tries at home to Market Harborough, but it wasn’t quite enough, as they went down narrowly by 22 points to 20.
There was better news for Stamford Seconds, who came out on top in their local derby against Stamford College Old Boys, recording a convincing 42–8 victory. Star of the show was flying winger Marcus Oliver, who helped himself to a hat-trick of tries.
And in Counties 1 Midlands East, it was a difficult afternoon for Bourne, who went down 36–7 to Southwell.
Turning to rugby union, and it was a mixed afternoon for our two East Midlands clubs in the opening round of the European Champions Cup.
Starting with Northampton Saints, who got their European campaign off to a winning start with a hard-fought 28–12 home victory over Cardiff Rugby at Franklin’s Gardens.
It was a different story for Leicester Tigers, who travelled to the south of France to take on Pau.
Despite making a promising start, with England international and local lad Ollie Chessum crossing for an early try, the Tigers were unable to contain the French side, who eventually ran out convincing 41–17 winners.
