May Day traditions are once again taking place in Braunston in Rutland today
as well as fundraising for the church and two local causes. The crowning of the May Queen, who is accompanied by her four attendants. This is just part of a day of festivities at the annual Braunston May Fayre, with the street market, craft market, live music, duck race, a dog show, traditional games, classic cars and a whole lot more. There's also a big prize raffle and proceeds from the day go to the village church, The Mount Group Riding for the Disabled. And the Oliver Liddar Foundation, which supports community initiatives, youth and poverty across Rutland, Leicestershire and also Vancouver. Chair of the Braunston May Fayre committee Simon Phillips says there's so much to see and do today.
‘Yeah, it's a great family day out in the village. We've got stalls all along Cedar Street, around the Blue Ball. And then autumn craft stores inside the church, some exhibitions outside the church, and then we've got lots of entertainment starting in Cedar Street. So we've got the street dance from the Rutland Youth Dance Academy, the crowning of the May Queen, and this year it's Charlotte from Rossington and she will be supported by the four seasonal attendance. And then the actual Maypole dance is later in the day. We've got a stage and we've got the Uppingham Jazz and Soul Band on the stage earlier on in the day and then we got a local band Paraphernalia that are playing towards the end of the day. Traditional village games, so we've got Splat the Rat, we've got the human fruit machine, we've got skittles. If you get thirsty then straight into the village hall with lots of lovely refreshments and of course not forgetting right opposite in the River Gwash we've got our duck racing and those duck races go on throughout the day and they culminate in the Quack National, which is at 2:30 on the day’.
