A Lincolnshire County Councillor from Stamford is tabling a motion today calling for more power for communities when it comes to 20 mile an hour zones.
Richard Cleaver is proposing measures to enable town and parish councils to make requests for 20 mile an hour zones at locations in their areas where they think these might be appropriate. The motion also proposes existing advisory 20 mile an hour limits outside schools should be made mandatory and enforceable. Richard, who represents Stamford WEST, says if Lincolnshire County Council forms a clear policy on the measure it will make roads safer and also increase greener transport.
‘I hope that the county will now come up with a specific policy which will meet the needs of communities and meet their aspirations on it. We are aware that we wish to encourage people to have healthy lifestyles, to walk and cycle more and not be so reliant upon cars and motor vehicles and people won't do that unless they feel safe on the streets.’
That's the meeting today and there was widespread support for the motion and Lincolnshire County Council are proposing to work with our highways department in the new year to achieve it.
