The Rutland Times is to stop being printed a week today.
It will still remain online by the end of this month. A new weekly Rutland and Stamford Mercury newspaper will be printed and also include the best of the Times too. With more people reading their titles digitally than ever before and the rising cost of printing, owners Iliffe Media says this is the best way of securing the future of the titles and thank the community for their continued support. The Rutland Times started as a community free sheet in 1977, and was eventually bought by the Mercury's previous owners Johnson Press, who continued to run this as a separate title for several years. Editor of both titles, Kerry Coupe, says although it's the end of one era, it's the start of another.
‘Very sadly, on Thursday, March the 19th, that will be the last print edition of the Rutland Times. Unfortunately, it's no longer sustainable for us to have two printed products in the marketplace. But we will still continue to cover Rutland in the Rutland and Stamford Mercury, which is out every Friday and it's just the next natural step in our story. We're still committed to covering Rutland. You will still see our journalists out and about at events and our photographers, but there will just be one weekly title instead of two'.
